I was just two nights away from the start of December, my favorite holiday month, when I stayed up well past everyone else in the family to finish this Advent calendar. I simply couldn’t leave without making sure it was ready for my kids—it’s such an important part of our Christmas tradition, and I couldn’t wait to come home and dive into the rest of our Advent activities as a family.
The whole thing came together in one sleepless night, and after putting it up in the window, I decided to keep it covered with the curtains until December 1st so it would be a nice surprise for the kids.
My idea was inspired by something I saw on Funkytime, but I wanted to simplify it a bit. No hot glue or tricky felt-cutting for this exhausted mom—just stencils and a Sharpie did the trick! They worked perfectly and let me finish everything in time.
For each day, I cut out small squares of burlap, used a stencil with numbers, and wrote the countdown days directly onto them using a Sharpie. If you’re feeling confident, you could even skip the stencil and freehand it. Then, I wrapped little gifts or notes inside—ours were more about fun family activities than material things this year.
It’s such a special tradition we look forward to every year, and while this one was super easy to put together, I still love last year’s Pottery Barn-inspired chalkboard version and the sweet paper bag calendar I made back in 2010.
This year’s version feels especially “us.†It’s simple, cozy, and made with materials I already had around the house. And the best part? It’s all about spending quality time together as a family.
We’ll be doing crafts, baking cookies, watching holiday movies, and more—all while enjoying the warmth of our home during this magical season.
If you’re looking for ideas, I actually created my own printable list of Advent calendar activities, but unfortunately, I forgot to save the final version to share with you (it was late!). But don’t worry—I found another awesome blogger who offers free printables with 100 different activities for your Advent calendar. You can find those HERE.
PPS: I’m so excited to see how much joy this brings to our family. Crafting memories is always better than anything store-bought!
