The hatching technique of the money turtle

The money turtle, also known as the red-bellied turtle, broken-plate turtle, or three-lined closed shell turtle, is a nationally protected species classified as a second-grade key protected animal. Due to its rarity and high market value, it has become a highly promising candidate for fish farming. Currently, the price of a single turtle weighing around 10 to 20 grams can reach up to 4,000 yuan. However, breeding and hatching money turtles is quite complex and requires scientific knowledge and careful management. First, understanding their breeding habits is essential. Money turtles typically mate during the estrus period, which usually occurs from April to October each year. The spawning season runs from May to September, with eggs laid mostly at night, though some may be laid during the day. Fertilized eggs take approximately 60 to 90 days to hatch under the right environmental conditions. Second, selecting and raising healthy adult turtles is crucial. Female turtles should weigh more than 5 kg, while males should be over 1 kg. They must have a uniform body shape, good health, no deformities, and a light-colored shell. Before breeding, they should be thoroughly disinfected and fed nutrient-rich concentrates with appropriate additives to ensure optimal reproductive health. Third, collecting and processing the eggs is a delicate process. After the turtles spawn, eggs can be collected 2 to 3 days later using bamboo sticks as markers. Hands and incubation equipment must be strictly disinfected before handling. Fertilized eggs are identified by the presence of a milky white spot on the shell. These eggs are then placed in a layer of moist and dry sand, about 10 cm thick, with at least 2 cm between individual eggs and 3 cm between rows. The eggs should be positioned with the milky spot facing upward. A label indicating the laying date and other details should be inserted. The incubator can be made from materials like foam boxes or wooden barrels, with drainage holes at the bottom to prevent waterlogging. Fourth, managing the incubation process is critical. Maintaining a stable temperature of around 32°C is essential for successful hatching. The sand used for incubation must remain at a consistent temperature throughout the process. All steps must be carried out with strict hygiene to avoid bacterial infections. If any infected eggs are detected, they should be removed immediately along with the surrounding sand. Fifth, after hatching, the baby turtles need special care. Once the embryos mature, the hatchlings will use their heads and front limbs to break through the shell and climb to the surface. Newly hatched turtles should be placed in a resting box made of casks or similar containers. After two days of rest, when the umbilical plates are yellowed and closed, they should be gently disinfected with a dilute potassium permanganate solution for 30 minutes. Following this, they should be offered food for 2 to 3 days before being moved to a hatchling pool for further development. Juvenile money turtles primarily feed on crushed egg yolk, pig liver paste, and fish puree. It's important to change the water regularly to maintain clean and healthy living conditions. With proper care and attention, these turtles can thrive and grow into valuable breeding stock.
