Observing the color and measuring the transparency of pool water are simple yet effective ways to assess water quality in fish farming, playing a vital role in scientific aquaculture. The color of the water is closely related to the types and quantities of plankton and microorganisms present. For example, when the water appears pale or milky white, it usually indicates a high concentration of plankton, often resulting from the use of organic fertilizers. This condition is ideal for fry, as it provides ample food sources.
If the water turns green, it suggests an abundance of algae, which is beneficial for carp growth. On the other hand, if the surface of the water looks yellowish-white, it may signal low oxygen levels, requiring immediate action such as using an aerator or applying lime water to improve water quality. Brown water typically means a high level of organic matter, which can be harmful to fish. In such cases, it's important to replace the water promptly to avoid water aging.
Yellow-green water is considered the most suitable for fish farming. For filter-feeding species like mussels and oysters, the water can be deeper with a transparency of around 25 cm. However, for predatory fish, slightly clearer water with a lighter color is preferred.
The ideal level of water transparency varies depending on factors such as the pond's surroundings, breeding methods, species being raised, farming techniques, and seasonal and geographical differences. Generally, maintaining a transparency of 25–30 cm is recommended. In early spring, when temperatures are lower, keeping the transparency at about 30 cm helps increase light penetration and warm up the water more quickly. From May to September, as temperatures rise, the water should gradually become deeper, with transparency maintained at around 25 cm to support the growth of plankton and ensure a balanced ecosystem.
