How to store good food in summer

As summer approaches, the challenge of preserving farm produce becomes more complex. With rising temperatures and humidity, proper storage techniques are essential to maintain food quality and prevent spoilage. Here are some effective methods to ensure your stored food remains safe and fresh throughout the season. First, all foods intended for long-term storage should be carefully prepared by ensuring they are dry, fully matured, and clean. Removing any dirt or moisture from the surface helps prevent mold and pests from taking hold. Second, before storing, it's important to clean and disinfect all containers and storage areas. You can use a diluted solution of 80% dichlorvos EC (20 times dilution) and spray it on the surfaces. After application, allow the containers to air dry for at least 2–3 hours before placing food inside. Third, when the temperature inside the storage area is higher than outside, it's advisable to open windows and doors at night to allow natural ventilation and cooling. This helps reduce internal heat and prevents condensation that could damage the stored goods. Fourth, regularly inspect the bottom, sides, and corners of the storage area. These spots are more prone to moisture buildup, which can lead to mold growth and spoilage. Make sure these areas remain dry and well-ventilated. Fifth, if you're storing grains in bags, arrange them in a way that allows for good airflow—like stacking them in a pyramid or using a vented structure. Periodically swap the lower bags with the upper ones to ensure even drying and prevent moisture from accumulating at the bottom. Sixth, if you notice any grain is damp or wet, move it outdoors to dry under the sun or in a well-ventilated area. Once properly dried, it can be safely returned to storage. Lastly, if you find that the stored grain has been infested by insects, take immediate action. In addition to methods like sifting and sun exposure, consider using natural repellents or safe insecticides to protect your stock. By following these steps, you can significantly extend the shelf life of your stored farm products and reduce the risk of loss due to spoilage or pests. Always stay vigilant and adjust your storage practices according to seasonal changes.
