How to increase the weight of fattening pigs

Feeding finishing pigs is a critical aspect of pig farming that directly impacts farmers' profitability. The challenge lies in achieving optimal weight gain while maintaining cost-effective feeding practices. One effective solution is the use of fermented feed, which not only improves feed efficiency but also enhances pig health and growth. Fermented feed can be made by processing various raw materials such as bran, sweet potato vines, peanut leaves, rice straw, corn cobs, corn, and even chicken manure. Through fermentation, these materials are transformed into a nutritious, biologically active feed with a pleasant aroma, mild sweetness, and long-lasting quality. This type of feed helps improve pigs’ ability to adapt to biological diets and reduces grain consumption, making it a sustainable choice for farmers. When using coarse material fermented feed, it should be combined with conventional concentrates in a balanced way. Pigs should be fed with thick, fibrous food and fewer meals throughout the day, adjusting based on environmental temperature. In summer, increasing the thickness of the feed helps meet the pigs' water needs, while in winter, over-diluting the feed should be avoided to prevent excessive urination and heat loss. It’s recommended to feed pigs five times a day and adjust the amount of roughage according to their feeding behavior. Monitoring the amount of natural feed they consume is important to avoid spoilage in the trough, which could reduce their appetite. For suckling piglets, the fine portion of the fermented feed can be soaked in cold water for several hours and then filtered through a fine mesh before being fed. A small amount of fried soybean flour can be added to enhance the aroma and stimulate their appetite. The coarser fraction is suitable for older pigs. For weaned piglets, adding sugar-rich ingredients like cooked mink skin, carrots, citrus peels, or sugar scraps can make the feed more palatable, encouraging better eating habits and improving daily weight gain. By adopting these feeding strategies, farmers can optimize both the nutritional value and economic benefits of their pig production system.
