Pigs that have just been purchased need to be given a short rest for about 30 minutes before being offered water. Once their breathing has stabilized, you can start offering them water. It’s best to provide them with slightly salted water, especially during the summer months when dehydration is more common. Avoid filling the trough too much, as this may cause the pigs to drink too quickly or even fight over the water.
Typically, pigs will drink for 3 to 4 minutes, then rest for 2 to 3 minutes in the trough before drinking again for another 2 to 3 minutes. They usually take three rounds of drinking in total. After they finish, lead them back to a dry area to rest. When the pig stops drinking, stop calling and stop pouring the water.
