Gypsum powder prevents rice physiological blight
In the cold paddy fields of Shanchong, a common issue known as physiological rice blast disease often occurs, especially in organic rice paddies where the rice is not fully decomposed. This condition typically appears during the early growth stage of the rice plant. Affected plants show poor tillering, with leaves turning brown and developing irregular brown spots on the lower leaves. These symptoms can sometimes be mistaken for those of leaf rice blight. When the lotus roots are pulled out, the root system appears yellow-brown or even black, and the seedlings are short and weak. Farmers refer to this situation as "early autumn."
There are three main causes behind this physiological disease. First, the decomposition of green manure can release harmful substances such as hydrogen sulfide. Second, some fields that have been affected by rust may contain toxic materials. Third, the soil may become too acidic, compacted, and waterlogged, leading to poor aeration and drainage.
To manage this problem, farmers should adopt rational fertilization practices and maintain proper water management. In mild cases, applying 75 to 100 kilograms of fire ash per acre can help. For more severe conditions, adding 10 kilograms of gypsum powder per acre has proven effective within about eight days. Gypsum helps break down harmful substances in the soil, neutralizes acidity, improves soil structure, and enhances aeration. As a result, the rice seedlings can develop new roots and gradually return to normal growth. With these measures, the health of the crop can be significantly improved, ensuring better yields and healthier plants.
