Cage raising ducks against "three diseases"
Duck rearing in a caged system is an advanced and efficient method that has evolved beyond traditional free-range and captive farming. This approach involves raising high-quality breeds such as Beijing Ducks, Cherry Valley Ducks, and South Suwako Ducks from hatching to market weight entirely within a controlled indoor environment. The caged system ensures better hygiene, easier management, and more consistent growth rates. However, it also requires careful attention to health and nutrition to prevent common diseases.
One of the most critical issues in caged duck farming is calcium and phosphorus deficiency, which can lead to weak legs, difficulty standing, and even death. To prevent this, farmers should add 3% calcium powder or 5% gypsum powder to the feed, along with small amounts of snails or grit. If ducks show signs of the disease, supplementing their feed with 0.1% vitamin D for 10 days can help restore their health.
Another common problem is vitamin deficiency, especially when the diet is not well-balanced. To avoid this, it's important to include green feed, oysters, snails, and frogs in the ducks’ diet. Adding 0.2% to 0.3% of a vitamin supplement to the feed (increasing to 1% if symptoms are severe) can significantly improve overall health and immunity.
Duck lice are another concern, particularly in crowded conditions. To prevent infestations, ducklings can be given a 0.02% potassium permanganate solution during their first five days of life. Regularly adding oxytetracycline to the feed helps control bacterial infections. It’s also essential to clean the bottom of the cages daily by placing plastic sheets under them and removing feces regularly. Sprinkling fresh lime water every seven days keeps the environment sanitized.
If lice or other parasites are detected, affected ducks should be isolated immediately. Some farmers use rabbit blood granules to treat duck plague with promising results. The treatment involves roasting barley in an iron pot, then mixing it with rabbit blood and hot wheat in a wooden barrel or ceramic tank. Infected ducks can be manually fed 60 to 100 tablets of this mixture, which has shown effectiveness in reducing symptoms and improving recovery. This natural remedy is worth trying, especially in cases where conventional treatments may not be available.
