Prevention and cure of diseases and insect pests in summer fruit trees

With the rising temperatures and humidity during summer, fruit trees are increasingly vulnerable to diseases and pests. To help farmers manage these issues effectively, reduce crop losses, and maintain productivity, the reporter spoke with Lu Guoqiang, Secretary-General of the Provincial Plant Pathology Society. He provided valuable insights into the best practices for managing common fruit tree pests and diseases during this critical season. According to Lu, the development of pests and diseases typically follows three stages: initial, active, and advanced. It's crucial to take preventive measures early on, before an outbreak occurs. For pests, it's important to act when they are still small and manageable—targeting them before they multiply or cause serious damage. Controlling pests in their early life stages, especially before the third instar, is most effective, as they are smaller, have thinner bodies, and are more susceptible to treatments. In terms of disease management, improving the overall health of the tree through proper cultivation is key. This includes ensuring good soil conditions, adequate watering, and pruning to enhance air circulation. Once a disease is detected, manual removal, scraping, cutting, or applying pesticides can be used depending on the severity and location of the infection. For example, with fruit rot, which becomes more severe as temperatures rise, farmers should regularly inspect trees and remove new lesions promptly. Applying cibiqing 2 times liquid to the affected areas helps disinfect wounds and prevent further spread. For pests that attack leaves, flowers, fruits, or stems, early spraying is essential. Once they become established, control becomes much harder. For instance, leaf roller moths and other leaf-feeding insects should be treated before they start rolling or entering the leaves. Similarly, fruit borers must be addressed before they penetrate the fruit. Pesticides should be applied strategically, using high-efficiency, low-toxicity products that are safe for both the environment and human health. When using pesticides, it’s important to follow instructions carefully, diluting them properly and applying them evenly. The underside of leaves should be fully covered, and the correct dosage should be used based on the specific area being treated. Avoid increasing concentrations unnecessarily, as this can lead to resistance. Rotating between different types of pesticides—such as organic and inorganic options—can help prevent resistance. It’s also advisable to avoid spraying during windy conditions and to time applications to avoid extreme temperatures. While higher temperatures can improve insecticidal effectiveness, they also increase the risk of poisoning. Therefore, it’s best to apply treatments during cooler parts of the day.
