According to Lu, the development of pests and diseases typically follows three stages: initial, active, and advanced. It's crucial to take preventive measures early on, before an outbreak occurs. For pests, it's important to act when they are still small and manageable—targeting them before they multiply or cause serious damage. Controlling pests in their early life stages, especially before the third instar, is most effective, as they are smaller, have thinner bodies, and are more susceptible to treatments.
In terms of disease management, improving the overall health of the tree through proper cultivation is key. This includes ensuring good soil conditions, adequate watering, and pruning to enhance air circulation. Once a disease is detected, manual removal, scraping, cutting, or applying pesticides can be used depending on the severity and location of the infection. For example, with fruit rot, which becomes more severe as temperatures rise, farmers should regularly inspect trees and remove new lesions promptly. For pests that attack leaves, flowers, fruits, or stems, early spraying is essential. Once they become established, control becomes much harder. It’s also advisable to avoid spraying during windy conditions and to time applications to avoid extreme temperatures. While higher temperatures can improve insecticidal effectiveness, they also increase the risk of poisoning. Therefore, it’s best to apply treatments during cooler parts of the day.
