Rice black sorghum

Scotinophara lurida (Burmeister), commonly known as the rice stink bug, is a species of true bug belonging to the family Aphididae. It is primarily found in southern Hebei, Shandong, and northern Jiangsu provinces, as well as regions south of the Yangtze River. This pest mainly infests rice crops but can also damage wheat, millet, corn, sugarcane, beans, potatoes, and citrus plants. The injury caused by this pest is characterized by nymphs feeding on the stems, leaves, and panicles of rice plants, sucking out the sap. This feeding results in yellow spots on the affected areas, which can lead to stunted growth and even complete withering of the plant in severe cases. Over recent years, changes in agricultural ecosystems and crop patterns have contributed to a steady increase in the population of this pest, making it a growing concern for farmers. Morphologically, adult S. lurida measures 8.5–10 mm in length and 4.5–5 mm in width, with a long oval shape and a dark brown to black coloration. The head is slightly narrower than the thorax, and the compound eyes are prominent. The front corner of the thoracic shield extends laterally, while the scutellum is small and slightly concave or truncated at the end. Eggs are nearly barrel-shaped, reddish-brown, measuring approximately 0.9 × 0.8 mm, and feature around 40–50 small holes along the edge. The eggshell has a reticulated pattern with fine engraved dots and a white powdery coating. The first instar nymph has a brown head and belly, with red markings on the dorsal surface and red spots on the ventral side, reaching a body length of about 1.3 mm. The third instar nymph is dark brown to grayish brown, with a small reddish-brown spot on the abdomen and slightly visible wing buds, measuring 3.3 mm in length. The fifth instar nymph has a light black head and thorax, a slightly green abdomen, and clearly visible hind wing buds, with a body length of 7.5–8.5 mm. In terms of life habits, S. lurida typically has one generation per year in Jiangsu and Zhejiang, two generations in Jiangxi, and two to three generations in Guangdong. Adults and some older nymphs overwinter in soil cracks, under stones, or in the rhizosphere of weeds, as well as between rice stalks and bark crevices. In early summer, they attack rice fields, with nymphs hiding in sunny areas near the base of rice plants during the day and feeding on leaves or panicles in the evening or on cloudy days. Eggs are laid on the leaf sheaths 6–9 cm above the water surface, often in groups of more than 14 eggs arranged in two rows. Each female lays around 75 eggs. Fields with early planting and lush vegetation tend to suffer more damage, especially in hilly areas. Natural enemies include rice blast black bees, Beauveria bassiana, birds, spiders, and frogs. For control, one effective method involves using spores to soak adult bugs and eggs that are laying eggs near the water surface. Soaking the spores in water for 24 hours can prevent them from hatching. During the egg-laying period, proper drainage should be maintained, and the area where eggs are laid should be reduced by keeping the water level at 10–13 cm. Spores should be soaked and applied every 3–4 days for 4–5 consecutive times to kill a large number of egg masses. Another approach is to spray insecticides such as 2.5% emulsifiable concentrate at 1500 times dilution, 20% fenvalerate at 2000 times, or 19% trichlorfon at 800 times during the early nymph stage. A second application should be made after 15 days. Alternatively, 10% imidacloprid (WP) at 2000 times dilution can be used, although it acts more slowly, it offers a longer residual effect of up to 25–30 days and promotes better crop production.
