Treatment of the lack of water in the late culture of Pleurotus ostreatus
Oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) accounts for roughly 40% of the total yield in most cultivation systems. After the second harvest, the moisture content in the growing medium is significantly depleted. Although the mushrooms may still be harvested, the fruiting bodies tend to be thin, dry, and lack flavor. To improve productivity and quality, several techniques can be employed to replenish water and nutrients:
1. **Standing Pouch Irrigation Method**: Instead of using large containers, this method involves placing the mushroom bag upright on the floor of the growing room. Water is added, and the top of the bag is pulled up to create a reservoir. A 2 cm diameter hole is drilled about 4/5 of the way through the material. Water is poured into the hole daily, using warm or cold water depending on the temperature. Once the bag is fully rehydrated, it is moved back to the growing area.
2. **Broken Cultivation Method**: This technique is ideal when good-quality soil is available and there's a nearby water source. The site should be oriented east-west. Trenches are dug to a depth of 40 cm, width of 90 cm, and any length. A 10–15 cm layer of soil is placed along the trench, with drainage ditches around it. Insecticides like dichlorvos are applied around the area, and lime powder is used for disinfection. The fungus tubes are removed from their plastic bags, cut into sections, and 4–6 holes are made with wire. These sections are placed upright in the trenches, filled with compacted soil, and covered with a 1 cm layer of sterilized fine soil. A large amount of water is then poured into the trenches. Once the water has soaked in, a 1 cm layer of soil is added on top. A plastic sheet is placed over the area to maintain humidity. After about 7 days, mushrooms can be harvested.
3. **Wall Irrigation Method**: The infected parts of the mushroom roots and mycelium are carefully removed from the plastic bags. A base of bricks is laid, and fertile garden soil is loosened. For every 100 kg of soil, 15 kg of wheat bran and 3 kg of lime are mixed in, then moistened. The fungus cylinders are placed into the soil and built into a wall that is 1.5 meters high. A layer of sticky soil is applied to the surface, about 0.8 cm thick, ensuring no gaps. A small sink is constructed on top of the wall, and wet soil is poured in after two days. By day five, the mycelium will have fully colonized the wall, and fruiting begins within 6–8 days.
Another approach involves partially removing the plastic bag from the fungus tube. When a base wall is in place, the outer side of the plastic bag is kept intact. Two half-bagged tubes are placed inward, spaced 10 cm apart. The space between them is filled with soil. Additional layers of soil are added between the exposed parts of the fungus tubes. The wall is built to a height of 1.5 meters, and a concave sink is created on top. Wet soil is added, and mushrooms can be harvested within 6–8 days.
These methods should be adapted based on the specific conditions of the growing environment. To enhance yield and quality, it’s recommended to add nutrients to the irrigation water. A nutrient solution formula includes: 100 grams of glucose, 8 grams of magnesium sulfate, 6 grams of urea, 10 grams of superphosphate, 6 grams of potassium dihydrogen phosphate, and 50 liters of water. This mixture helps boost the growth and productivity of Pleurotus ostreatus.
