The safe wintering method for breeding goldfish
With the rapid pace of economic growth, both urban and rural residents have increasingly turned to raising ornamental goldfish as a hobby and even a small business. However, many beginners lack proper knowledge about winter care, which often leads to fish dying within less than a year. It's well known that the longer goldfish are raised, the more developed their size and coloration become, resulting in higher ornamental value and market price. Therefore, understanding safe wintering techniques is essential for successful goldfish keeping.
First, it's important to adjust feeding practices after autumn. Goldfish thrive best in water temperatures between 20°C and 28°C, during which their metabolism is at its peak, and they grow quickly. Once the temperature drops below 5°C, they enter a dormant state. In most regions of China, the winter period typically lasts from December to March. During the first month of this time, it's crucial to increase protein and fat intake in their diet. Foods like egg yolk or goji berries can help them build up energy reserves and improve their cold resistance, ensuring they survive the harsh winter.
Second, proper water disinfection is key to preventing diseases. Before and after the wintering period, goldfish should be soaked in a 3-5% salt solution for 3 to 5 minutes. At the same time, breeding containers or ponds should be treated with 200 grams per cubic meter of bleach or quicklime for 10 days to eliminate harmful pathogens and predators.
Third, managing goldfish indoors or outdoors during winter requires careful attention. If kept in tanks or water clusters, place them in a sunny, sheltered area where the water doesn't freeze. If ice forms in the morning, break it immediately to prevent suffocation. However, avoid keeping the water too warm, as this may cause unnecessary activity and lead to wasted food without actual growth. For outdoor ponds, choose a sheltered location and ensure the water stays around 5-8°C to support safe wintering. During this time, no feeding is necessary—let the fish rest naturally.
Fourth, if you decide to warm the environment, use electric heating tubes to maintain a stable temperature of about 10°C. This allows for regular feeding and viewing, but remember that dormancy is a natural process. Ideally, let the fish sleep during the coldest months for about a month to ensure a healthy start in spring.
Once the water temperature rises to 8-10°C in spring, goldfish will begin to feed again, marking the start of their new growth season. With proper winter care, your goldfish can thrive and bring beauty and joy to your home for years to come.
