Breeding meat donkey varieties and fattening methods
Donkey meat breeds are suitable for raising large donkeys, including those from the standard donkey and Texas donkey species. Small to medium-sized donkeys include the Jiami and Biyang breeds.
Feeding principles should be tailored according to the donkey’s age, physical condition, gender, strength, and overall health. Feed them in designated slots with fixed feeding times—morning, afternoon, evening, and night, making four feedings per day. Coarse feed must be chopped into "three-inch grass" to aid digestion, while fine feed should be ground or fermented to improve taste and digestibility. Since donkeys have small stomachs, they should be fed small portions frequently throughout the day, taking advantage of their ability to eat at night without disturbing rest. Additionally, they require a significant amount of digestive juice when consuming hay, so it's essential to provide plenty of clean water and salt daily. Brushing the skin regularly is also important for their overall health.
For young foals, apart from regular donkey care, training to eat concentrates can begin at 15 days old. Milled grains such as corn, barley, millet, and oats can be made into a thin porridge, with a bit of sugar added to encourage consumption. Start with 10-20 grams per day, gradually increasing to 80-100 grams after a few days, then 100-200 grams after one month, and up to 500-1000 grams after two months. By the time they reach nine months, they can be fed 3.5 kilograms of concentrate daily, with a total of about 500 kilograms used during the entire fattening period.
For adult donkeys, newly purchased ones should initially be given some easily digestible feed like grass or bran, with limited amounts of concentrated feed, filling them to about 70% full. After a few days of observation and ensuring normal eating habits, they can enter the regular feeding phase. During this time, coarse feed mainly consists of cottonseed hulls, while the fine feed includes 50% cottonseed cake, 30% cornmeal, and 20% bran. Newly arrived donkeys may not eat these feeds immediately; they may need a week to adjust and become accustomed to the new diet. Initially, feed them twice a day, with roughage provided at night. After about two months, they should be able to eat up to 80% full, and once they are fully adjusted, they can be prepared for slaughter.
