Breeding meat donkey varieties and fattening methods
Donkey meat breeds are suitable for raising large donkeys, including native donkeys and Texas donkeys. Small and medium-sized donkeys include Jiami and Biyang donkeys.
Feeding principles should be tailored according to the donkey’s age, physical condition, sex, strength, and overall health. Feed them in fixed slots with short stubble to maintain consistency. Provide feed four times a day—morning, afternoon, evening, and night. Coarse feed must be chopped into "three-inch grass" to make it easier to chew, while fine feed should be ground or fermented to improve taste and digestion. Since donkeys have small stomachs, feed small amounts frequently and take advantage of their nighttime rest period. They also require a lot of digestive juices to process hay, so ensure constant access to clean water and enough salt. Brush their skin daily to promote circulation and hygiene.
For young foals, in addition to regular donkey care, begin training them to eat concentrates at around 15 days old. Prepare a porridge-like mixture using milled corn, barley, millet, or oats, and add a little sugar to encourage consumption. Start with 10–20 grams per day, increasing gradually to 80–100 grams after a few days, then 100–200 grams after one month, and up to 500–1000 grams after two months. By the time they are nine months old, feed about 3.5 kilograms of concentrate daily, totaling around 500 kilograms during the entire fattening period.
For adult donkeys, when purchasing new ones, start by feeding them some easily digestible feeds like grass or bran, but avoid overfeeding. Feed them about 70% full initially. After a few days of observation, if they are eating normally, you can proceed with the fattening phase. During this time, the coarse feed mainly consists of cottonseed hulls, while the fine feed includes 50% cottonseed cake, 30% cornmeal, and 20% bran. New donkeys may not eat these feeds at first, but they usually adapt within a week. Feed them twice a day, with roughage provided at night. After about two months, they should be able to eat up to 80% full, and once they reach full capacity, they can be prepared for slaughter.
Applicable objects: cattle, horses, pigs, sheep, dogs, cats and other kinds of poultry and experimental animals.
