The safe wintering method for breeding goldfish

With the rapid economic growth, more and more urban and rural residents are keeping ornamental goldfish as a hobby. However, many fish keepers lack proper knowledge about winter care, which often leads to the death of goldfish within a year due to improper management. It's well known that the longer the goldfish is raised, the larger its size becomes, enhancing its ornamental value and increasing its market price. Therefore, understanding safe wintering methods is crucial for maintaining healthy and beautiful goldfish. First, it's important to adjust feeding practices after autumn. Goldfish thrive best in water temperatures between 20°C and 28°C, during which their metabolism is most active, and they grow quickly. Once the temperature drops below 5°C, they enter a dormant state. In most parts of China, from December to March, this is the critical wintering period. During the first month of winter, you should focus on feeding them nutrient-rich foods high in protein and fat, such as egg yolk or goji berries. This helps them store energy and build up their cold resistance. Second, ensure thorough disinfection before and after wintering. Before putting goldfish into winter storage, soak them in a 3-5% saltwater solution for 3 to 5 minutes. Also, treat the breeding containers or ponds with 200 grams per cubic meter of bleach or quicklime to eliminate harmful bacteria and predators. This step is essential to prevent diseases during the long winter months. Third, manage the wintering environment properly, whether indoors or outdoors. If keeping goldfish in tanks or water clusters indoors, place them in a sunny and sheltered area. Make sure the water doesn’t freeze. If ice forms in the morning, break it immediately to prevent suffocation. However, avoid keeping the water too warm, as this can cause unnecessary activity and reduce their ability to survive the winter. For outdoor ponds, choose a sheltered location and insulate the area if possible. Maintain the water temperature around 5-8°C to ensure a safe hibernation. Fourth, consider warming the water slightly during the coldest period to shorten dormancy. Using an electric heating tube in a controlled indoor setting can help maintain a stable temperature of around 10°C. While this allows for regular feeding and viewing, it's important to remember that dormancy is a natural process. Ideally, let the goldfish rest for about a month during the coldest time of the year. Once spring arrives and the water temperature rises to 8-10°C, the goldfish will begin to feed again and start a new growth cycle. Proper wintering not only ensures survival but also promotes better health and appearance, making your goldfish more vibrant and valuable in the coming season.
