Save the rabbit hair to "four defenses"
Rabbit hair has unique physical and chemical properties that make it prone to tangling, moisture absorption, insect damage, and brittleness when exposed to sunlight. These characteristics directly impact the quality of the hair, making proper preservation essential. To maintain its integrity, four key protective measures—pressure protection, moisture control, sun protection, and pest prevention—should be strictly followed.
1. **Pressure Protection**
Rabbit hair is sensitive to pressure and can easily become tangled when subjected to weight or compression, especially in warm and humid conditions. To prevent this, freshly cut rabbit hair should be stored in a special wooden cabinet or cardboard box. Avoid placing heavy objects on top of the container. To keep the hair smooth, it’s recommended to line the inside of the box with glossy paper, which not only protects the hair but also makes it easier to handle.
2. **Moisture Protection**
Rabbit hair is highly hygroscopic, meaning it readily absorbs moisture from the air. During rainy seasons or in humid regions, this can lead to microbial growth, causing discoloration and degradation. Therefore, rabbit hair should never be stored directly on the floor or against walls, where humidity tends to accumulate. In such areas, placing small amounts of lime in corners or along the floor can help absorb excess moisture and protect the hair.
3. **Sun Protection**
Prolonged exposure to sunlight or high temperatures can cause the keratin proteins in rabbit hair to break down, leading to discoloration and loss of flexibility. This reduces the hair’s textile performance. As a result, rabbit hair should never be left in direct sunlight. If the hair becomes damp or moldy, it should only be dried in the sun for 1–2 hours before being moved to a cool, well-ventilated area for further drying and storage.
4. **Insect Protection**
Being a natural fiber made primarily of keratin, rabbit hair is vulnerable to insect damage, particularly moths. To prevent infestation, a small amount of mothballs can be placed in the storage container. However, they should always be enclosed in a gauze bag to avoid direct contact with the hair, which could cause staining or damage. One bag should be placed in each corner and the center of the box. Regular inspections are crucial, and it’s best to check the stored hair on a sunny day to ensure no damage has occurred.
By following these four key preservation methods, the quality and longevity of rabbit hair can be significantly improved. This approach ensures that the hair remains in optimal condition for use in various applications, such as textiles and crafts.
