The main points of raising water
To ensure the success of leech farming, it's essential to follow proper procedures at every stage. First, site selection is crucial. Choose a location that is sheltered from strong winds, receives ample sunlight, and has convenient access to irrigation and drainage systems. The pool should be about 1 meter deep, with a water depth of 0.6 meters. Inlet and outlet pipes should be installed for easy water circulation. At the bottom of the pool, place stones, branches, and other natural debris to provide a suitable habitat for the leeches.
Next, stocking the leeches should be done in spring or summer when the weather is warm and favorable for their growth. Leeches are hermaphroditic, meaning each individual can lay eggs. They typically spawn between March and April, with each leech producing 1–4 eggs. Each egg can hatch into 60–80 young leeches. Therefore, summer and autumn are the peak seasons for leech activity, making them ideal for harvesting. A density of 5,000 to 8,000 leeches per square meter is recommended for optimal growth.
Feeding is another critical aspect. In the wild, leeches feed on aquatic plants, microorganisms, and organic matter. In captivity, they are often fed snails or animal blood. It's common to feed them once a week using pig, cow, or sheep blood clots. Place one piece of blood clot every 5 meters in the pool. The leeches will quickly gather around the scent. After feeding, any leftover food must be removed promptly to prevent water pollution and maintain good water quality.
Maintaining water quality is vital for healthy leech development. The water should remain clean, especially after feeding. Water temperature should be kept between 15°C and 30°C. Below 10°C, leeches stop feeding, and above 30°C, they stop growing. During July and August, which is their second spawning season, water changes should be done regularly to keep the water fresh and oxygen-rich.
Finally, winter management is important. As temperatures drop, leeches burrow into the soil to hibernate. Those restocked in early spring can be harvested between September and October. Before harvesting, drain the water and use nets to catch the leeches. Select large, healthy individuals, aiming for 10–15 kilograms per acre. Clean the leeches with fresh water, soak them in light saltwater, or mix them with food powder before killing them. Afterward, wash and dry them thoroughly for sale.
By following these steps, farmers can ensure a successful and profitable leech farming operation.
