How to make a pig feeding trough
Pig feeders are generally categorized into three main types: fixed, mobile, and automatic. In modern pig farming, fixed feeders are commonly used. These feeders are typically constructed from materials like brick-and-mortar concrete or wire mesh cement. Some designs are permanently installed within the pen, while others feature a funnel-shaped feeding opening outside the enclosure (see Figure 1). In some cases, part of the trough is inside the pen, and the rest extends outside, allowing farmers to add feed from the outside while pigs eat from the inside (see Figure 2). This design is particularly suitable for small-scale farming in rural areas.
The typical dimensions of a fixed feeder include a base width of about 45 centimeters, a height of 20 centimeters, and a total depth of 30 centimeters. It's important to avoid sharp right angles in the design, as this can lead to feed wastage. Pigs often leave food in the corners, making it inaccessible and resulting in unnecessary loss. To prevent water accumulation, a drainage hole is usually placed at the bottom of the trough. During feeding, the hole is sealed with a cork, and when cleaning is needed, the cork is removed to allow any standing water to drain naturally.
This type of feeder is not only cost-effective but also easy to maintain, making it an ideal choice for small farms where efficiency and practicality are key. Additionally, the design helps reduce feed spoilage and keeps the feeding area clean, which contributes to better animal health and hygiene.
