How to make a pig feeding trough
Pig feeders are generally categorized into three main types: fixed, mobile, and automatic. In modern pig farming, fixed feeders are widely used, especially in small-scale rural operations. These feeders are typically constructed using materials such as brick-and-mortar or wire mesh concrete. Some designs have the feeding trough permanently installed within the pen, while others feature a funnel-shaped opening outside the enclosure for easier feeding. In some cases, part of the trough is located inside the pen, and the rest extends outside, allowing farmers to add feed from the outside while pigs eat from inside.
A typical fixed feeder is placed beneath the pigpen. The trough has a width of about 45 centimeters at the bottom, stands approximately 20 centimeters high, and extends to a depth of around 30 centimeters. It's important to avoid sharp right angles in the design, as this can lead to feed being trapped in the corners, which pigs cannot access, resulting in waste. To prevent this, the troughs are usually designed with smooth, curved edges to ensure even distribution of feed.
Additionally, a drainage hole is installed at the base of the trough. This hole is usually sealed with a cork during feeding to prevent water or feed from leaking out. When it's time to clean the trough, the cork is removed, allowing any accumulated water to drain naturally. This simple yet effective design helps maintain hygiene and reduces the risk of contamination, making it a practical solution for small-scale pig farmers.
