The Influence of Sunlight on the Sex of Yak when Breeding Cows

Abstract: After artificial insemination of the head of the breeding cow to the sun, the number of maternal calving females (38) was higher than the number of females (23) (61) (p<0.05). Increase the rate of maternal calf birth.

Editor's note:

China had done similar experiments in the 1980s but did not achieve stable results. This article is now published and I hope someone can further verify this method. The test results should be sent to us in time for summary and publicity.
Raising the birth rate of females is an important issue in the current agricultural science. It has been reported that sun exposure to cattle during breeding or insemination can promote the preferential energizing of X sperm and bind to the mother's ovum [1], thus increasing the proportion of female offspring of the dam. The experiment was studied in the 1980s and was proposed by a Russian researcher. In recent years, there have also been successful research reports in China [2]. To further verify the application of the research results in the Qinghai Plateau, we conducted an application study of this experiment.

1 Materials and Methods

1.1 The selection of breeding cows began in early 2005. 76 Holstein breeders with healthy reproductive disease or their hybrid cows with mixed breeds and three generations of young cows were selected as cows in nine villages and towns such as Yongxing in the vicinity of the township of Wuyuan County. (For the test cattle).

1.2 Installation of seeding racks Set up a number of seeding racks in open and sunny places outdoors, with the breeding stands facing east.

1.3 Semen Selection Chinese Holstein fine frozen sperm provided by the province's frozen semen station.

1.4 Test Methods Select breeding in the breeding rack from 9:00 to 11:00 in the sunny weather. In the first half hour of mating, the estrus should be fixed to the sun in the breeding rack, and then Chinese Holstein cattle thawed semen should be used to perform rectal grasping of insemination in the cattle (must be faced to the sun when mating). After mating, the cows will be bred. Stay in the rack for more than half an hour and then take the cow and make a corresponding breeding record. About one year later, a comprehensive statistical analysis was performed on the mating records of all the breeders. The number of moles produced and the proportion of males and females were calculated to determine the test effect.

2 Analysis of results

2.1 After statistical analysis of 73 cows, a total of 61 cows were born (including 1 dead cockroach). Among the 61 calves produced, 38 were females and 23 were males. The ratio of female to female was 62.2%.

2.2 According to statistical analysis by X2 test, the proportion of males and females was significantly different (P<0.05), indicating that the test treatment was effective. That is to say, the proportion of maternal calves produced by cows can be increased by artificial insemination to the sun.

3 Discussion

3.1 This experiment preliminarily verifies that artificially inseminating cattle to the sun in the highland area of Qinghai Province can increase the ratio of females to their mothers. This test is not limited by geographical conditions. The operation is simple and does not require any additional cost. It has practical significance and feasibility.

3.2 As the number of cattle for this test was limited, the number of test cattle in the plan could not be reached, and only the specified number of samples was obtained. Therefore, the effect of actual application in production still needs to be further verified in future practice. In addition, due to the long cycle of this experiment, due to the limitation of the planned time, no repeat test was conducted.
