The potted white orchid, especially when grown in the northern region, may appear beautiful at first, but after several years of growth, the lower parts of its main and lateral branches often become bare and leafless. This unattractive condition is commonly referred to by gardeners as “off the pants.†To address this issue, a full pruning is recommended, ideally done in mid to late May. This process encourages the growth of new buds and axillary buds, which helps to reshape the tree crown and prevent the old branches from continuing to grow upward. As a result, new foliage will sprout from the axillary buds.
After pruning, the number of lateral branches can increase by 3 to 4 times, with each original branch producing 3 to 4 new lateral shoots. This not only makes the canopy look fuller and more attractive, but also increases the number of flowering sites, leading to better blooming in the future.
When performing this crown renewal technique, it’s essential to make the cut just above a lateral bud, preferably about 0.6 cm above the top bud. This prevents the formation of a "pile" or dead wood at the cut site. Additionally, when selecting which buds to keep for regrowth, it's important to choose those that are growing on the outer side of the tree. The new branches that develop from these buds will grow outward, maintaining a neat and balanced shape. If you select inner buds instead, the new growth may cross over each other, disrupting the overall form of the plant.
After pruning, it's advisable to protect the cut areas from drying out. You can cover the cuts with a small piece of plastic film or apply a sealing paint to prevent dry rot, which could hinder the development of the new buds. Taking these precautions ensures a healthier and more successful regrowth of the orchid’s canopy.
