Potted Prynne should pay attention to the spring pruning
The potted white orchid, especially when placed in the north, may appear beautiful at first, but after several years of growth, its lower stems and branches often become bare and leafless. This unsightly condition is commonly referred to by gardeners as “going pants,†which not only looks unattractive but also affects the overall health of the plant. To restore its appearance and vitality, a full pruning is necessary. The best time for this process is during mid to late May, when the plant is still in an active growth phase.
Pruning involves cutting back all the branches, which encourages the emergence of new buds and lateral buds. This technique helps to reshape the tree’s crown, preventing the original branches from growing too long and spindly. As a result, axillary buds will sprout new leaves, significantly increasing the number of lateral branches—often by 3 to 4 times. On a single main branch, 3 to 4 new lateral shoots can develop, making the canopy more lush and dense.
This method not only improves the plant’s appearance but also increases the number of flowering sites, leading to more blooms in the future. When performing the pruning, it's crucial to make the cut just above a lateral bud, ideally about 0.6 cm above the top bud. This prevents the formation of a "pile" or deadwood, which could hinder regrowth.
Another important consideration is the selection of the buds to be pruned. It’s best to choose those that grow on the outer side of the tree’s crown. The new branches that emerge from these buds will grow outward, maintaining a balanced and natural shape. If you prune inward-facing buds, the new growth may cross over each other, disrupting the tree’s structure.
After pruning, it’s advisable to protect the cuts from drying out. You can wrap the cut areas with a small piece of plastic film or apply a thin layer of pruning paint. This helps prevent dry rot and ensures the buds remain healthy and ready to sprout new growth. By following these steps, your white orchid will not only look better but also thrive for many more years.
