Limousin I. Origin and Distribution Limousin cattle originate from the Limousin Plateau in central France, where they have been raised for centuries. The breed is named after the region and has become one of the most popular beef cattle breeds in France. In the early 1970s, Limousin cattle were introduced to other parts of Europe and the United States. Physical Characteristics Limousin cattle are characterized by their red or yellow coat color, with lighter areas around the mouth, nose, eyes, inner limbs, and tail. Their hooves are typically reddish-brown. The head is short, the forehead broad, and the chest wide and deep. The body is long, with well-developed back muscles and short, sturdy legs. Adult bulls typically weigh around 1,100 kg, while cows average about 600 kg. Under optimal breeding conditions in France, bulls can reach weights between 1,200 and 1,500 kg, and cows can weigh up to 800 kg. III. Production Performance Limousin cattle are highly valued for their meat quality and carcass performance. They have a high meat yield, with well-developed eye muscle area and full fore and hind limbs. Their beef is known for its tenderness and flavor, making them a top choice in the beef market. Calves grow rapidly under intensive management, reaching an average weight of 408 kg at 10 months and 480 kg by the time they are a bit older. The average daily gain during lactation is between 0.86 and 1.0 kg. By the age of 8 months, they can already produce marbled beef, which makes them a preferred breed in France and several European countries. IV. Crossbreeding with Chinese Cattle China first imported Limousin cattle from France in 1974 and again in 1993, aiming to improve local cattle breeds in provinces such as Henan, Shandong, and Inner Mongolia. The crossbred cattle showed significant improvements in size, meat quality, growth rate, and hybrid vigor. Today, Shandong, Heilongjiang, and Anhui are the main breeding areas for these improved cattle. Despite the growing demand, there is still a shortage of quality breeding stock nationwide. Currently, there are approximately 450,000 crossbred Limousin cattle in China.
