Why are two diesel engines in use?
When I visited the countryside recently, a few farmers approached me with some questions they had been struggling to understand. I took the time to explain each one thoroughly.
1. Xiao Li asked: “I’ve always taken good care of my small four-wheel tractor, followed all the maintenance instructions carefully, and never touched the fuel injection pump. However, in the past few weeks, the engine started emitting black smoke and felt weak. The technician at the farm station said the fuel supply was delayed. Why would the fuel advance angle automatically get later?†I explained this to him in detail.
In a diesel engine, the fuel isn’t immediately ignited when it’s injected into the cylinder. There’s a short period for physical and chemical preparation before combustion begins. That’s why fuel must be injected at a specific angle before top dead center (TDC) during the compression stroke. This ensures a proper air-fuel mixture is formed and that the maximum pressure is achieved as the piston passes TDC. Over time, the fuel injection timing advance angle tends to decrease due to wear and tear on engine components.
The main reasons for the delay in fuel supply include: First, wear on the camshaft gears of the fuel injection pump increases backlash, which causes the crankshaft to rotate slightly more before the camshaft turns, resulting in a reduced fuel advance angle. Second, wear on the cam, tappet, and plunger can delay the start of the plunger's upward movement, reducing the fuel advance angle. Third, increased clearance between the plunger and sleeve due to wear means the plunger has to move further up to block the oil hole, also reducing the advance angle.
When the fuel advance angle decreases, the ignition of the air-fuel mixture is delayed, causing the combustion to occur later in the cycle. This reduces the maximum pressure, leading to lower power output, black smoke from the exhaust, higher fuel consumption, increased water temperature, and difficulty starting the engine. Therefore, it's important to regularly check and adjust the fuel advance angle at a qualified workshop to ensure the engine runs smoothly.
2. Xiaowu asked: “I own an Iron-55 tractor. One day, the high-pressure fuel line broke, so I replaced it with a new one. After that, the engine made a strange, drum-like sound, and I couldn’t figure out why. The technician at the farm station told me that the replacement pipe was longer than the original, which caused the ‘drum’ sound. After replacing it with the correct length, the problem went away. I don’t understand why changing the high-pressure fuel line’s length would affect the engine’s performance.â€
I patiently explained that the length of the high-pressure fuel line is specifically designed to match the engine’s injection timing. It cannot be changed arbitrarily. The fuel injection process happens very quickly—about 1/17th of a second. During this time, the pressure wave travels through the high-pressure line, delivering fuel to the injector at the right pressure and speed. If the line is too long, it increases the volume inside, which delays the pressure wave and alters the injection pattern. In multi-cylinder engines, this can cause uneven timing between cylinders, leading to irregular combustion, knocking sounds, and poor engine performance, especially during cold starts.
That’s why, if you need to replace the high-pressure fuel line, it’s crucial to use one that matches the original length and diameter exactly. Any deviation can lead to serious performance issues.
