Sunlight Greenhouse Sweet Pepper "One-sided Down" Falling Mantle Technology
In the cultivation of sweet peppers, the stems are typically hard and brittle due to high lignification, unlike tomatoes, cucumbers, or loofahs, which can naturally trail. Normally, plants grow above the vine wire by late May. However, since upward growth is not supported, the vines tend to become tangled afterward. Even when the plants grow above the wire, they remain vigorous, produce high-quality fruits, and it’s not advisable to leave more fruit on the plant. Once harvested, the fruits must be picked immediately. To address this issue, Shouguang vegetable growers adopted a pruning technique known as “one-side down†from greenhouse peach tree practices, leading to the development of the “one-side down†cultivation method for sweet peppers, which has brought significant economic benefits.
**First, timing of falling**
The best time to fall the vines is usually in mid-June, depending on the plant's growth stage. The ideal moment is when the growing tip of the plant exceeds the vine wire, signaling that it's ready for the process.
**Second, the falling technique**
This process is typically done twice. The first fall occurs after the third pod is harvested. Before this, larger fruits that haven't reached marketable size should be removed, along with old, yellow, or diseased leaves from the lower parts of the plant. This helps reduce nutrient consumption and prevents dense canopy formation, which could slow recovery. When falling, gently untie the slings on each branch and pull them forward (or southward) at a 50–60-degree angle. Start with the southernmost branch, then gradually pull the rest, making the plant shorter. Finally, use a sling to lift the main leader about 20 cm above the base of the leaf stem. The second fall happens after the fourth pod swells. Loosen the sling, allowing the weight of the fruit to slowly bring the branch down to a 30-degree angle, then reattach it to the vine wire. It’s best to perform this in the afternoon on a sunny day when the plant is less likely to break due to low moisture and increased flexibility.
**Third, field management after falling**
After each fall, apply a copper-based fungicide such as 50% DP wettable powder diluted 500 times, 47% Homer WP diluted 600 times, or 27.17% copper noble suspension diluted 500 times. This helps prevent bacterial infections through wounds. Regular field care follows. After the second fall, if the lower leaves are too dense, some of them can be pruned to improve air circulation.
The “one-side down†technique for sweet peppers is simple, practical, and highly effective. Once implemented, it significantly boosts economic returns. In the middle and late stages of greenhouse sweet pepper cultivation, this method extends the growth period from the end of June to the end of July, adding an extra month of fruiting. According to data, compared to traditional methods, the average income per plant increases by 2.5 to 3 yuan. For an acre of bell peppers, this translates to an additional 5,000 to 7,000 yuan in income. This technique has proven to be a game-changer for many farmers.
