After harvesting cherries, the tree shifts its focus from fruit production to preparing for the next growing season. During this critical period, the nutrients generated by the leaves are no longer used for fruit development but instead support the formation and maturation of flower buds, strengthening branches, and accumulating essential nutrients. Effective management during this phase plays a key role in boosting the tree's nutrient reserves, enhancing its ability to survive winter, and improving resistance to harsh environmental conditions. First, it's important to adjust the branch structure. After harvest, remove or trim any thin, weak, or diseased branches, as well as shoots that block sunlight. This helps open up the canopy, allowing better light penetration, which promotes the development of strong, mature branches and supports the formation of flower buds.
Second, pest and disease control is crucial. One of the main threats during this time is the peach leafhopper, also known as the swiftlet. Infestations typically peak between July and September. Affected leaves show yellow and white spots, and severe cases can lead to early leaf drop, weakening the tree and reducing flower formation, which ultimately lowers the yield in the coming season. To prevent this, apply a 200-times diluted Bordeaux mixture or a 1000-1500-times diluted solution of 40% Dimethoate immediately after fruit harvest.
Third, proper fertilization is essential. From late May to early June, apply 50–1000 kg of organic fertilizer per tree. Mixing in 1 kg of superphosphate improves results. Fertilizer should be applied alternately in radial and circular patterns, just beneath the edge of the canopy. The trenches should be shallow on the surface and deeper underground to avoid damaging roots. After application, water the area thoroughly to help the nutrients reach the root zone.
Fourth, foliar feeding can enhance nutrient uptake. After fruit removal, spray a 0.5–1% urea solution every 10–15 days, and combine it with a 0.5% superphosphate solution.
