"Broken bone heightening surgery" has higher medical risks and may be disabled
On October 10, during a regular press conference, Mao Qun'an, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, warned that "bone lengthening surgery" carries significant medical risks and could lead to disability if not performed under strict guidelines. The ministry has issued regulations requiring that such procedures be conducted only in qualified hospitals with proper facilities and trained professionals.
According to reports, "bone cutting heightening" is an orthopedic treatment used to correct bone defects or limb length discrepancies caused by congenital conditions, trauma, tumors, infections, or other diseases. It should not be considered a cosmetic procedure. Hospitals performing this technique must be classified as Grade III general hospitals or specialized orthopedic institutions with approved "orthopedics" departments. They must also have appropriate infrastructure, including sterilization, surgical, nursing, and rehabilitation facilities.
Only orthopedic doctors with intermediate or higher professional qualifications are allowed to perform this surgery, and they must be registered for clinical practice. Additionally, the procedure must be applied strictly according to medical indications, ensuring that nerves, blood vessels, tendons, muscles, and skin maintain or regain their original functions during the process.
In other news, the Ministry of Health also released data on infectious disease outbreaks in September 2006. A total of 354,646 cases of Class A and B infectious diseases were reported nationwide (excluding Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan), resulting in 818 deaths. Among these, there were 393 rabies cases, a 37% increase compared to the same period last year, with 318 deaths—still the highest number. No new cases of atypical pneumonia, avian flu, polio, or diphtheria were reported this month, while 23 other Class A and B infectious diseases were recorded.
