Finnish hospital uses sunlight to treat skin cancer

For the first time, a Finnish hospital uses sunlight to treat superficial skin cancer and a precancerous skin lesion, actinic keratosis.

Compared with photodynamic therapy, which is currently used to treat skin cancer, daylight therapy has the characteristics of simpler operation and better effect, and provides a new way for the treatment of superficial skin cancer and actinic keratosis.

In photodynamic therapy, a pretreatment drug applied to a cancerous site chemically reacts with a specific wavelength of red light to produce reactive oxygen species that kill cancer cells. The sun therapy used in this Finnish hospital replaces red light with sunlight. After pre-applying the drug, the patient should be exposed to the sun for more than two hours to make the sun kill the cancer cells. During the treatment, the patient also needs to apply sunscreen on healthy skin as protection.
