Bao Lotus (Figure)
The Po Lotus, also known as the gemstone lotus lamp or vine vine, is a striking and exotic flower with large pink sepals and drooping spikes that resemble fairy lights cascading from the sky to the earth. Its scientific name is *Pachypodium lamerei*, though it is often confused with other species in the Myrobalaceae family. This evergreen shrub typically grows up to 2.5 meters tall in its natural habitat, but when cultivated in China, it usually remains under 70 centimeters. The plant features quadrangular stems, flat branching, and opposite, sessile leaves that are ovate or oblong, leathery, and shiny.
The flowers bloom in drooping spikes, with a corolla diameter of about 2.5 cm, coming in shades of red or pink. The outer petals can range from 3 to 10 cm in length, and they display a vibrant pink hue. In greenhouses, the flowering period usually lasts from April to May, and each bloom can last around a week. After blooming, the plant produces small, spherical pink berries with persistent sepals at the top.
Native to tropical rainforests in Africa and Southeast Asia, the Po Lotus thrives in warm, humid conditions with temperatures ideally between 18°C and 22°C. It does not tolerate cold well and prefers bright, indirect light rather than direct sun. It has some shade tolerance but should be protected from harsh exposure. The plant requires well-drained, loose soil and is drought-tolerant once established.
Cultivation of the Po Lotus demands careful attention. Spring and autumn are the main growing seasons. After the flower buds form in April, regular watering and misting of the foliage are essential to maintain moisture and humidity. Fertilization should alternate between organic and compound fertilizers every 10 to 15 days. After flowering, the flower stalks should be cut back to the base. During summer, fertilization should stop, and shading and ventilation are important for cooling. In winter, when the plant goes dormant, watering should gradually decrease, and the soil should remain dry. Ensure it receives plenty of light and keep the room temperature above 10°C.
Propagation is mainly done through cuttings. After flowering, the tip of the plant is cut off, and lower leaves are removed. With a rooting hormone applied, the cutting is placed in a mix of soil and kept moist under a plastic cover in a warm, well-lit area around 20°C.
The Po Lotus is highly ornamental, with its unique flower shape, lush foliage, and attractive fruit. Hanging potted plants in living rooms or gardens add a touch of elegance and natural beauty, making it a popular choice among plant enthusiasts.
