Lush green plants in forest

Red flower

Scarlet thistle, also known as burrowing cricket or Jiangnan pipa, is a special variety of Robinia pseudoacacia. It gets its name "burrs" due to the red bristles found on its stems, twigs, and pedicels. This plant features a wide range of colorful flowers, making it an excellent choice for garden planting. Its leaves resemble those of a hedgehog, with odd-pinnate structures, opposite arrangement, and 7 to 13 oval-shaped leaflets. The flowers have a butterfly-like corolla, typically pink or purple, and appear in sparse racemes, ranging from 2 to 7 per cluster. The inflorescence is usually sterile, and the plant rarely produces seeds, making seed propagation difficult. As a result, it is commonly grafted onto hedgehog rootstock. Scarlet thistle is a hardy tree species, capable of withstanding cold, drought, and poor soil conditions. It can thrive in slightly acidic or slightly alkaline soils but does not do well in overly compacted or waterlogged ground, which can lead to root rot. This fast-growing tree is resistant to pruning, has strong sprouting ability, and is effective at absorbing harmful gases like hydrogen fluoride and ozone. It’s an ideal choice for urban greening and beautification. In cultivation, hedgehogs are often used as rootstock for grafting, either as shrubs or as small trees with tall branches. Grafting is typically done between late March and early April, using 1- to 2-year-old acacia rootstocks. When grafting, choose healthy rootstocks and scions. Cut the rootstock 10 cm above the ground, split it vertically, and prepare the scion into a wedge shape for insertion. Perform a bark graft or cleft graft, secure it with ties, and cover the graft area with soil. After about two weeks, check for survival and remove any competing buds. Once established, the tree grows rapidly and often blooms the following year. For a more tree-like form, select large hedgehogs and graft at a higher position, encouraging the development of a small tree structure. After successful grafting, the plant grows quickly, forming an umbrella-shaped canopy and flowering the next season. Regular pruning is essential to maintain a full, attractive crown by removing overlapping or unnecessary branches.
