Red flower
Scarlet thistle, also known as the burrowing cricket or Jiangnan pipa, is a unique variant of Robinia pseudoacacia. Its common name comes from the red bristles found on its stems, twigs, and pedicels, which give it a distinctive appearance. This ornamental plant features a wide range of flower colors, making it an excellent choice for gardens and landscaping. The leaves resemble those of a hedgehog, with odd-pinnate arrangements, alternating leaf patterns, and 7 to 13 oval-shaped leaflets.
The flowers have a butterfly-like corolla, typically pink or purple, and appear in sparse racemes, ranging from 2 to 7 per cluster. However, the inflorescence is often sterile, and the plant rarely produces seeds. As a result, it is difficult to propagate through seeds, and grafting onto hedgehog rootstock is commonly used instead. The safflower pod is a hardy species, capable of withstanding cold temperatures, drought, and poor soil conditions. It can thrive in slightly acidic or saline-alkaline soils but should avoid overly compacted or waterlogged areas, which can lead to root rot.
This tree grows quickly, tolerates pruning well, and has strong regenerative abilities. It is also resistant to dust and harmful gases such as hydrogen fluoride and ozone, making it an ideal choice for urban greening projects. In cultivation, hedgehogs are frequently used as rootstocks for both shrub and small tree forms. Grafting is typically done between late March and early April using 1- to 2-year-old acacia rootstocks. Strong rootstocks and scions are selected, and the rootstock is cut 10 cm above the ground. A vertical split is made in the center, and the scion is prepared into a wedge shape for insertion. After grafting, the area is wrapped and covered with soil. Two weeks later, the buds are removed, and if the graft is successful, new growth appears quickly. The plant usually blooms the following year.
For larger trees, high grafting is performed at a certain height, allowing the formation of a small tree. Once established, the plant grows rapidly, forming an umbrella-like canopy and blooming the next season. Regular pruning is necessary to remove overlapping branches and maintain a neat, full crown. With proper care, this beautiful plant becomes a stunning addition to any garden.
