Japanese Agronomy: Hong Kong Will Relax Japan's 5 County Meat and Egg Imports

"Nihon Keizai Shimbun" reported that the Minister of Agriculture of Japan, Lu Yedao, who was visiting Hong Kong, said that Hong Kong is expected to relax restrictions on the import of meat and eggs in five counties such as Fukushima in Japan in the near future. Affected by the Fukushima nuclear accident, Hong Kong required certification of radioactive substances for meat and eggs products in five counties including Fukushima, Gunma, Tochigi, Ibaraki, and Chiba. Due to the fact that the certification format was not determined, it was actually in a state of stagnant import.

Luye visited Hong Kong on March 3 and 4. The Hong Kong government stated that the data format will come to a conclusion in the near future, making it possible for the five counties to export meat and eggs to Hong Kong. However, import restrictions will continue to be imposed on vegetables, fruits, and dairy products.

Hong Kong is Japan's largest export destination for agriculture, forestry and aquatic products. As restrictions are gradually lifted, Japan’s agricultural exports are expected to gradually recover.

According to the report, Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang plans to visit more than 100 food-related companies in Japan in May to demonstrate the expansion of cooperation in food import cooperation with Japan.
