Hydrangea is a deciduous shrub belonging to the Saxifragaceae family, commonly known as the "powder puff" due to its fluffy, round blooms. When in full bloom, small white flowers cluster together to form a soft, rounded ball, which is also referred to as a "bucket ball." These plants are often cultivated in northern regions for ornamental purposes, particularly in pots. Propagation is typically done through cuttings, making it an easy and effective method for gardeners.
During winter, specifically in November and December, greenhouse growers trim the old branches of hydrangeas. The top portion is not removed entirely, leaving only 7 to 8 centimeters of the stem. Cuttings are then taken from this section, about 3 to 4 centimeters long. After planting, the cuttings are placed in a room maintained at around 15°C. It's important to mist the plants with water 1 to 2 times daily to maintain humidity. Rooting usually takes approximately 45 days. Once the cuttings have established roots, they are transplanted into pots filled with a well-prepared growing medium.
The ideal soil mix consists of 3% manure, 30% compost, and 40% sand, ensuring good drainage and nutrient content. Hydrangeas require regular feeding, typically once a week with liquid fertilizer or once a month with a dry alternative. A common liquid fertilizer mixture includes 30% hemp sauce diluted with 70% water. For dry fertilizer, a blend of sesame meal and one-tenth ferrous sulfate works well.
These plants thrive with consistent moisture, especially during spring, summer, and autumn, when they should be watered daily. In winter, watering should be reduced, and only done when the soil feels dry to the touch. Additionally, pruning is essential in early spring, around August. Dead, weak, or spent branches should be removed to encourage healthy new growth and better flowering in the coming season. With proper care, hydrangeas can flourish and provide beautiful, vibrant blooms year after year.
