Fall attention to control the big green leafhopper
Daqingyeye, commonly known as green leaf fleas or large green floating dust, is a pest that affects fruit trees such as apples, pears, peaches, and apricots. At the end of autumn, adult females lay their overwintering eggs in the bark of fruit tree branches. Severe infestations can cause branches to dehydrate and eventually die, especially affecting young saplings. To manage this pest effectively, the following control measures are recommended:
1. Apply a white wash solution to the shoots before the adults lay their eggs in the fall. This helps prevent egg-laying by creating an unfavorable environment. The white wash can be prepared by mixing 10 parts of quicklime, 2 parts of lime sulfur, 1 part of salt, 1 part of clay, and 40 parts of water. A small amount of pesticide can also be added for extra protection. Focus on applying the mixture to the stems and branches of young trees.
2. Utilize black light traps in the orchard, taking advantage of the adult insects' attraction to light. This method is effective for monitoring and reducing adult populations during their active season.
3. For saplings that can be buried in cold soil, ensure they are covered with soil after the leaves have fallen. This helps destroy overwintering eggs. In the following spring, manually remove any remaining pests to prevent reinfestation.
4. Since Daqingyeye may migrate to cruciferous vegetables like cabbages and radishes in late autumn, avoid planting these crops near saplings. If intercropping has already occurred, harvest them before the end of September to minimize the risk of infestation.
5. During the egg-laying period, spray insecticides to kill adult insects. Recommended options include 50% dichlorvos emulsion diluted at 1:1000 or 50% phoxim at the same dilution rate. These treatments should be applied according to local guidelines and safety protocols.
By implementing these integrated pest management strategies, farmers and gardeners can effectively reduce the impact of Daqingyeye on fruit trees and maintain healthier plant growth. Regular monitoring and timely intervention are key to long-term success.
