Researchers say watch sphygmomanometers are expected to go on the market

Release date: 2009-05-14

American scientists have developed a new type of portable sphygmomanometer that can be used for hours and even days on the wrist to monitor the blood pressure of the human body at any time, and is expected to help detect the risk of heart disease and stroke.

When people are measuring blood pressure by medical staff in a hospital, a nervous mood may cause abnormal blood pressure. In addition, the body's blood pressure changes at any time, and a single measurement is difficult to reflect the overall picture of the cardiovascular system.

Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said that unlike traditional sphygmomanometers that need to temporarily block arterial blood flow and then deflate to measure blood pressure, they developed a new sphygmomanometer to calculate blood pressure by monitoring the speed of pulse wave propagation along the hand artery.

This type of sphygmomanometer is much lighter than a normal sphygmomanometer and can be worn like a watch. Its battery is also the same size as a regular watch battery.

By continuously measuring blood pressure, this sphygmomanometer allows doctors to learn more about the wearer's blood pressure changes, detect abnormal conditions in time, and eventually use the data to predict the onset time of heart disease patients.

Currently, researchers are making commercial improvements to this sphygmomanometer, hoping to make it simpler, more accurate, and cheaper. The scientist responsible for leading the research said the product is expected to be available within five years.
