Melatonin and serotonin regulate plant growth and development

Melatonin and its precursor serotonin are two highly conserved molecules in humans, animals and plants that play an important role in regulating a range of physiological activities. On the 23rd, from the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the researchers made important progress in the regulation of plant growth and development by melatonin and serotonin by comparing physiological responses and transcriptomics analysis.

Researchers from the Xiabianbanna Tropical Botanical Garden Plant Breeding Research Group used Arabidopsis thaliana as a material to study the growth and development of melatonin and serotonin. They found that the appropriate concentrations of melatonin and serotonin did not affect the elongation of the main root, but significantly promoted the occurrence of lateral roots. High concentrations of serotonin reduced root tip stem cell activity and cell division potential, inhibited the accumulation and transport of auxin, and thus inhibited the elongation of the main root; while the appropriate concentrations of melatonin and serotonin had no effect on auxin transport and response. This suggests that melatonin and serotonin-promoted lateral roots are independent of the auxin signaling pathway, which promotes the development of lateral roots by inducing cell wall remodeling of related genes.
