U.S. Develops Double Gene Transfer Cloning Pigs to Help Treat Hemophilia

The University of Connecticut recently announced that Yang Xiangzhong, a famous Chinese biologist, has cooperated with the scientific research department in Taiwan to develop the world’s first double-transgenic clone pig with human ninth clotting factor and pig lactoferrin. The results of this study are expected to be used to treat hemophilia. According to Professor Yang Xiangzhong of the University of Connecticut, the research was conducted under the condition of extreme secrecy by the research group he chaired and the Taiwan Institute of Animal Science and Technology. The first cloned pig was born in the Animal Research Institute of Taiwan on February 15 this year. The second and third cloned pigs were also born. These cloned pigs are currently in good health. According to reports, the somatic cells used to cultivate this group of cloned pigs came from the ear of a double-transgenic sow. This sow's milk produces ninth clotting factor and pig lactoferrin. The cause of human hemophilia is the lack of a ninth clotting factor. The milk produced by cloned pigs is biotechnologically processed and is expected to be used for the treatment of hemophilia. Porcine lactoferrin has the function of inhibiting bacteria and strengthening immunity, and it can resist inflammation and help growth, and at the same time, it can help prevent swine diarrhea and increase the bred rate of pigs. Yang Xiangzhong explained that whether the cloned offspring of the double-gene transfer pig would produce the two proteins in their milk like the donor sows still needs further study and observation. Yang Xiangzhong said that his cloning team spent the past three years on cloning genetically modified pigs and finally developed a highly efficient cloning method.
