Sheep management points

The tail docking of lambs is commonly practiced in long-tailed sheep breeds to maintain hygiene and ease of management. The procedure involves cutting the tail approximately 3 to 5 cm from the base, gently bruising the skin, and securing it with a strong rubber band. Iodine is then applied to prevent infection. After about 10 to 15 days, the lower portion of the tail will naturally dry up and fall off. All male lambs that are not intended for breeding should be castrated, typically around two weeks after birth. A common method used is the rubber band ligation technique, where the spermatic cord is tightly tied to cut off blood supply, leading to the eventual removal of the testicles. In long-term hoof-fed sheep, overgrown or uneven hooves can become a serious issue, affecting both feeding and mobility. To address this, it's recommended to trim the hooves twice a year—once in spring and once in fall. Care must be taken not to cut too deeply, as this could cause pain or injury to the sensitive inner parts of the hoof. Medicated baths are an effective treatment for external parasites such as lice and mites. It is best to perform the bath two days after shearing on a sunny day. For young sheep, a small tub or container is suitable. A 0.5% solution of trichlorfon is commonly used for this purpose. Deworming is essential for controlling internal parasites in sheep, including roundworms, hookworms, nodules, and liver flukes. A deworming schedule is usually followed twice a year—in spring and autumn. For controlling aphids, nodules, and hookworms, a product like ivermectin is often used at a dose of 20 mg per kilogram of body weight, administered orally. To target liver flukes and other trematodes, a medication such as bithionol is used at a dosage of 0.8 to 1 gram per kilogram of body weight. Regular health checks and proper management practices are crucial for maintaining the well-being of your flock. Always consult with a veterinarian before starting any treatment to ensure safety and effectiveness.
